Who I am and why I am running for Council.
I was raised here in Marmora from 1963 to 1980, and I’ve been a Marmora resident again since 1999 when my family and I moved back to live on Marble Point Road.
With some free time on my hands now, I believe I can best support Council as a calm and collaborative member to fulfill the varied needs identified by residents as well as those required by legislation. I fully realize these needs have to be rationally prioritized and planned as the Municipality is constrained by time, resources, and funding.
My retirement began in January of 2026, when I left CIBC after 15 and a half years as a Project Manager. Since 1983, my career was in progressive roles within Information Technology. Over the past 30+ years, my roles were in leadership positions where I worked collaboratively with various levels of corporate management, Regulatory Agencies, external clients, suppliers, and technical team members to create solutions and implement the associated hardware and software. The soft skills I trained in, developed, and used were communication, leadership, adaptability, and conflict resolution. My key technical skills are in risk management, budgeting, and organizational change management. The last 2 major projects I was responsible for were multi-year and multi-million-dollar endeavours.
I have decades of experience serving on boards of sporting organizations in Marmora and in Oshawa. I also enjoyed successfully coaching hockey teams for both these organizations. My definition of success for these teams was that the players developed their skills, supported the team, and enjoyed their time playing independent of the scoreboard results. I also supported these hockey organizations by officiating for several decades.
Key areas of interest as a Councillor (in non-prioritized order)
Medical resources – ensure we continue to have medical staff and services available locally for residents.
Municipal Infrastructure – for the safety and security of residents and visitors, our infrastructure needs to be maintained and, where required, improved or replaced. I was very disappointed by the closure of the arena facility for the 2024 – 2025 season and the adverse impact it had on sports organizations with increased travel costs and reduced practice/game time, loss of revenue to the Municipality, as well as the financial impact of implementing repairs in order to reopen.
Emergency preparedness planning – with the more frequent severe weather events the area has experienced in recent years, I believe there is an opportunity to enhance planning for how these situations should be handled.
Staffing and Succession Planning – on August 20th the Fire Chief position was finally filled after a lengthy search for a suitable candidate. The Municipality is currently in the position of having to begin the searches for a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and Manager of Transportation Services. Insufficient succession planning may result in adverse operational and service impacts, increased financial and administrative costs, as well as a reduction in staff morale.
Economic growth and development – from my casual observations, we seem to be missing out on opportunities being realized in other like-sized municipalities in our area. Comparisons with Madoc and Norwood come to mind as each has attracted several new businesses over the past couple of years.
I look forward to meeting and speaking with residents and local organizations to hear opinions, suggestions for improvement, and concerns.
